一般的に、絵の上手い・下手は、年齢や経験などではなく生まれ持った才能やセンスだと考えられることが多い。

しかし、最新の研究でその認識が覆された。絵が得意な人と苦手な人には、才能というよりも「視覚能力」に明らかな違いがあるというのだ。しかも、その能力は訓練によって習得可能だという。

これを発表したのは、ロンドン大学のレベッカ・チェンバレン教授率いる研究チームだ。実験では被験者たちにデッサンをしてもらい、その対象物を彼らがどのように見ているか、目で捉えた物をどれくらい記憶しているかなど、絵を描くうえで重要とされる様々な要素が調べられた。

その結果、上手にデッサンできた人とそうでない人には、対象物を目で捉える能力に大きな差があることが判明した。教授曰く、「絵が下手な人は、物事をありのままに見ていないため、まずは描くことよりも視覚能力を鍛えることのほうが重要です」とのこと。
